Roxanne is currently soliciting words, phrases and acronyms that should be forbidden for 2006. I know one tired phrase that I'll be happy to never hear again, and that's "bitch slap". I find it really discouraging how acceptable it is to bandy about a phrase which is essentially about beating the crap out of a woman. The whole glorification of the pimp lifestyle is usually merely amusing in a rather annoying way, but the fact that "bitch slap" is considered OK to use on prime-time TV just pisses me off. Bitch slapping is about controlling women, keeping them in their place, and I'll have none of it.
Along that line- the one that bothers me is calling a sleeveless undershirt a "wife beater".

Oh yes, I hate that one, too.

You're hitting home runs here lately.
Oh no, wait, that's the usual state of affairs, isn't it? ;)
I too can't stand that phrase, nor referring to grown women as girls. Sometimes I think I'm too uptight but there is actually a strong link between language and thought (tons of scholarship on this subject). People who pooh-pooh feminist critiques of language have no idea how important it is.
Tee hee. I just used the word "pooh-pooh".

Oh dear that last post really was slightly silly at the end. Can you upload an edit or delete feature that allows commenters to fiddle with their comments...?

"Tipping Point." It was a great concept when Malcolm Gladwell invented it a few years ago; now it's a cliche.
