journeys of a restless mind

Folks have the habit here of walking down the middle of the street.  I can't say that I blame them.  The sidewalks make no sense whatsoever.  They go along for a block or even half a block and then stop abrubtly.  Even if they do continue out to the street they are often buried under an enormous glassy puddle.  The edges of the streets are uneven, muddy, or blocked by parked cars.  The center of the street makes the most sense.  Traffic is sparse and easily avoided.  Away from the houses, the views are better, too.  Standing in the middle of Pierce street on a clear day you can see Mt. Rainier.  This makes me inordinately happy, rather like the fact that I can tune in Seattle radio stations on my boom box.  Mt. Baker looms so large on the horizon and so varied in shape and texture that I can't believe it's the same volcanic cone I viewed out of my eVil corp window.  I can't wait for the Spring; I want to get out on the water.  There are some beautiful kayaks here, stacked against a building like cords of wood.

bloggers booted from sculpture park

Two bloggers were escorted from Seattle's Olympic Sculpture Park on Sunday for trespassing on park grounds.  The official opening for the park is not until Saturday, Janurary 20th, 2007.  The two bloggers had no idea they were trespassing; the fact that they needed to sneak around a temporary chain-link fence did not for some reason clue them in.

"I just needed to get a foto for my Modern Mom column," said Janeen Armstrong, one of the ousted bloggers.  "Besides, it was Phil's idea to jump the fence."  The pair were wandering through the (newly planted) Henry and William Ketham Families Grove trying to catch a shot of that funky big typewriter eraser when approached by park staff.  When asked whether they were members of the press, they became confused. 

"No," claimed Phil, "we're just citizens wanting to see the park."

"Wait! Yes! I'm writing a column for the web," stated Janeen, "although I don't have my credentials with me."

It mattered not what they said.  They could not wander freely about the park, and were led immediately to an exit.  Luckily, Ms. Armstrong got her shot before The Man came to stomp on her.  Check out Wednesday's Seattle City Guide column to see it.  Or, there's a little sneak preview below the fold.
